There are a lot of great things about having friends that like to cook, eat, etc. as much as I do. One of them is they often snag reservations to great restaurants that I have been wanting to try. Or better yet, ones that I haven’t heard of.
And when we are all together and able to cook up a storm, eat and drink to our heart’s content without having to leave home. Those days are some of my favorites.

And while not as much fun as a group food & wine fest, I also love the inspiration I get from friends.
They have some great tricks up their sleeves. Someone may have even hidden some mango in a salsa verde which added just a touch of sweetness. Pure genius. And can’t wait to try it myself (and maybe claim it too).

So when any of these friends recommend a recipe, I know that it is something worth trying.
Something either terribly amazing or just plain terrible happened this week.
I discovered Dos Toros Taqueria and how ridiculously close it is to my house. I’m thrilled because they have great (CA style) tacos and burritos with highly quality ingredients – primarily local and/or organic – and great prices. I’m not so thrilled because having damn good tacos and quesadillas near by can be a bit dangerous.
So on my 18th trip in as many hours, I decided to pick up enough to share and bring it home for dinner. As an impulse buy when I was paying, I asked them to throw in some chips and salsa.
But when I got home, I realized it wasn’t salsa, but pico de gallo (fresh tomato salsa). And as far as I am concerned, that doesn’t work as a dip for chips. I love pico de gallo on plenty of things, don’t get me wrong, but I want something smoother and spicier when I think salsa.

It turns out we didn’t have any jarred in the fridge (that stuff goes quickly around here), but thankfully, salsa is a breeze to whip up.
Do you still have leftovers around, or did you gobble them all up this weekend in sandwiches? I definitely have to do a (few) sandwich(es), but by Saturday, I am usually ready for some new flavors. Knowing that an awesome stock is so easy, soup is often on my agenda.
After all the tastes of fall, I am quite ready for some spice.
And I love me some tortilla soup!
I make it based on my grandma’s version, with just a few tweaks.
